The season opening and most prestigious race of the NASCAR season, “The Daytona 500”, has been won by 5 time cup champion, Jimmie Johnson driving the PWR cooled Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsport.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second for the third time in four years. Earnhardt Jr. almost snatched the vic-tory by driving low on the last lap pulling up almost next to Johnson but was unable to take the front po-sition and finished closely behind Johnson.

Danica Patrick, the first woman to win the pole posi-tion at the Daytona 500 ran in the top 10 all day, led three times, including five laps under green and be-come the first woman to lead a lap at the race not under a yellow flag caution. She finished eighth, the highest finish ever for a female driver at the race.

The race began with most drivers running cautiously early on and being content to get the laps ticking over.

There was 2 major wrecks in the 55th running of the 200 lap Daytona 500. The first was on the lap 32 which involved 9 cars and the second was on lap 138 which also entangled 9 cars.

A late debris caution with less than 10 laps to go bunched the field back up, setting up a sprint to the finish. Jimmie Johnson led them out of the caution and held out to take the chequered flag.

PWR Performance Products was used by all of the 10 top cars.
